The Plague Is Still Here — And It Could Infect Your Cat - Inverse

Image
It may come as a surprise, but the plague that caused the infamous Black Death centuries ago is still alive and kicking. The CDC states that roughly seven human plague cases are reported annually. The disease typically spreads when a flea infected with the bacteria Yersinia pestis bites a human, or when the human comes in contact with a rodent — like a prairie dog — sickened with the disease, though it can also transmit through respiratory droplets. But people may not be aware that an overlooked member of their own household could also give them the plague. "Yes, cats and other mammals can get the plague," Molly DeVoss, a certified feline training specialist who runs the nonprofit Cat Behavior Solutions, tells Inverse Experts say that while both cats and dogs can get sick with the plague, cats are especially susceptible. Here's what you need to know about protecting your cat (and yourself) from the deadly disease. Note: Although Feline Panleukopenia is colloquially refe...

Discovery of a T cell subset points to new treatment for COPD exacerbations - News-Medical.Net

Image
Respiratory viral infections pose significant morbidity and mortality to patients with chronic lung diseases like emphysema and COPD, causing exacerbations that drive destruction of normal lung tissue, and leading to one of the most common diagnoses for hospital admissions. UC San Francisco researchers have uncovered a surprising role for fibroblasts in the lungs in activating T cell inflammation that drives lung destruction in COPD exacerbation triggered by viral infection. They also identified a T cell subset that can be targeted to treat COPD exacerbations. In a study publishing February 22, 2023 in Immunity , first author Chaoqun Wang, PhD, a UCSF postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Tien Peng, MD, identified a fibroblast-secreted factor encoded by a COPD-susceptibility gene, HHIP, that suppresses viral inflammation in the lung. In collaboration with Ari Molofsky, MD, PhD, UCSF associate professor of Laboratory Medicine, the authors demonstrated that loss of HHIP promot...

Local Announcement: Laser Hair Removal Near Me - South ... - Patch.com

Laser Hair Removal Near Me If you are looking for a way to reduce unwanted hair, laser hair removal is a great option. It is a safe way for permanent hair removal, facial and body hair. During your treatment, the doctor presses a hand-held laser instrument to your skin. The intense heat damages the hair follicles in the targeted area, which inhibits hair growth. If you're looking for a nonsurgical aesthetic treatment that doesn't involve surgery, a med spa is a great choice. They offer treatments such as Botox(r) injections, PRP hair restoration, Electrolysis Hair Removal, Coolsculpting, laser hair removal and more. A good med spa will perform a skin analysis to determine the best treatment plan for your specific needs. This can be done using a computerized system that uses high-resolution imaging to analyze your current skincare concerns and suggest the proper course of treatment. It is also important to find out who selects the products that the medical spa uses on ...

The 5 best kids' museums in Washington, D.C. - The Washington Post

Image
Washington is a wonderland of great museums. The kids lucky enough to live in the area never run out of opportunities to explore and learn. And the kids lucky enough to visit have more choices than they can squeeze into any reasonable itinerary. It's an embarrassment of riches, really. Which is why it's important to know which museums will really capture the imaginations of young minds. To narrow the list for both locals and tourists, we've highlighted five of the best D.C. museums for kids. Almost every Washington museum has elements targeted at children, but these museums take their kid focus to the next level. The five we chose feature exhibits that appeal to kids' interests — dinos! racecars! Elmo! — along with attention-grabbing interactive elements that allow children to touch and play. The little ones you have in tow might not want to leave. National Museum of Natural History Return to menu 10th Street and Constitution Avenue NW. 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. naturalhisto...

Community health workers fill care gaps among Bloomington ... - WGLT

Image
Inconsistency is pretty much the only thing Coretta Jackson can count on. Jackson is a community health worker employed by Chestnut Health Systems, a job she's had a little over a year. Her role with Chestnut Health is supported by a grant called the Medicaid Innovation Collaborative, or MIC, for short. The five-year initiative is made possible through funding from the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services. In 2021, Gov. JB Pritzker allocated $94.3 million for the Healthcare Transformation Collaboratives (MIC). Three million people in Illinois receive health insurance through Medicaid. MIC is one of 10 initiatives throughout the state aimed at increasing equitable access to quality health care. Central Illinois received $5 million of the money allocated to Medicaid Innovation. "The purpose is to bridge the health inequity gap," said Austin Howald, Chestnut's director of integrated community services. Several Chestnut programs fall under the MIC, includ...
