Chapman is a leader in GI clinical research, inflammatory bowel disease and physician quality improvement efforts. Though many people have never heard of it, "RSV is so common that pretty much everyone gets it by the time they are 2 years old," says Denise McCulloch, MD, MPH, an infectious disease physician-scientist at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. For most healthy children and adults, RSV causes a week or so of coldlike symptoms. But it can be very serious and even life-threatening for the very young, the old, and people with weakened immune systems or underlying lung or heart disease.
