Schools and spanking: Isn't it time we stopped using religion to justify violence? - Baptist News Global

Image
"Make education violent again" seems to be the slogan for a public school district in Missouri. The Cassville School District decided on June 16, 2022, to bring back spanking after parents requested for the schools to spank their kids. Merlyn Johnson In a scene reminiscent of Pontius Pilate washing his hands and blaming the people, Superintendent Merlyn Johnson told the  Springfield News-Leader , "Parents have said, 'Why can't you paddle my student?' And we're like 'We can't paddle your student,' our policy does not support that.'" Yet the superintendent went along with the parents' desire to change the policy, allowing school officials to hit kids by "swatting the buttocks with a paddle" with up to three swings. "It is something that has happened on my watch and I'm OK with it." Johnson said: "My plan, when I came to Cassville, wasn't to be known as the guy who brought corp

Why is it so challenging to find a primary care physician? - Harvard Health

Image
Burnout is causing physicians to leave the profession. Reading the book The Doctor Stories by William Carlos Williams seared into my mind the ways in which a primary care physician (PCP) can transform the lives of patients with a nuanced blend of careful listening, emotional connection, and medical skill. This book inspired me to become a PCP. According to a 2021 report by the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, an increased supply of PCPs is associated with better population health and more equitable outcomes. With our country's fraying healthcare system, it is essential to have a PCP who knows you, because it is almost impossible to access any type of coherent medical care without the coordination of a PCP. The most common question I get asked as a doctor — by friends, acquaintances, relatives, families of patients, colleagues — is "Can you help me find a PCP?" I ca

Should I go to an M.D. or a D.O. for my primary care? - Norton Healthcare

Image
Are you looking for a primary care provider? Confused about the difference between having "M.D." or "D.O." after the doctor's name? We've got you covered. M.D. vs. D.O. M.D. is an abbreviation used after the name of someone who has a doctor of medicine degree. D.O. is an abbreviation for a doctor of osteopathic medicine's degree. Both types of doctors are fully trained and licensed, but there are some differences that may make a difference for you as a patient. Similarities Both paths to becoming a physician require students to graduate from an accredited medical school. A tool used to accept students to medical school is the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Students must pass a national medical licensing examination and graduate from medical school. Next, students start a residency program and get a general medical license. From there, doctors can become board certified in their chosen specialty or subspecialty. All

COVID lockdown blamed for increase in severe common cold in kids - New York Post

Image
As children have headed back to school over these last few weeks, doctors have noticed an increase in severe cases of the common cold among some children from two of the most common viruses known to cause the upper respiratory infection: rhinoviruses and enteroviruses. That's according to a recent report out of Chicago — though the situation isn't limited to that area.  These viruses typically only cause mild upper respiratory symptoms in healthy adults. However, "we've seen a larger number of young children and infants with respiratory illnesses than we usually [see] in the summer — and more children with severe illness require hospital and ICU admissions," Dr. Czer Anthoney Lim, director of pediatric emergency medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in New York City, told Fox News Digital.  "What's been interesting is that we have had kind of a potpourri of viruses,&qu

Allied Health Major Lets Students Make a Difference Close to Home - UConn Today - University of Connecticut

Image
According to Emelis Santos '24, UConn Waterbury is the place to be. The allied health sciences major has nothing against the main campus in Storrs or any of UConn's other regional campuses. But the Waterbury native majoring in allied health sciences says the close-knit atmosphere and opportunity to stay close to her community gives Waterbury the edge. Santos isn't alone. She joins a growing number of students choosing to attend all four years at the Waterbury campus to pursue allied health sciences since the program's inception in the fall of 2020. Enrollment in the major has ballooned from 44 students in spring 2021 to 72 in spring 2022. There will be 37 incoming first-year students for the fall 2022 semester as well. The allied health major is definitely preparing me to be successful in the future. I'm glad to be a part of this. &#8212 Emelis Santos Santos says she appreciates the manageable size of the Waterbury campus and the allied health program

10 Ways To Get Rid Of Dark Spots On The Face + Common Causes - mindbodygreen

Image
Both alpha-hydroxy acids and beta-hydroxy acids (AHAs and BHAs) can help fade dark spots. They're different products, but they function in a similar way. AHAs, like lactic acid, glycolic acid, and mandelic acid, for example, help lighten dark spots by simply exfoliating the skin, Suarez says. "They can be irritating, however, and the irritation can worsen some types of [inflammation], especially in deeper skin tones," she continues. If your skin is a bit more sensitive to AHAs, consider opting for mandelic rather than glycolic or lactic acids. This ingredient is more gentle but will still help fade dark spots over time. In fact, a skin care regimen containing mandelic acid and vitamin C was associated with a 73% improvement in the appearance of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and melasma. BHAs, like salicylic acid, are traditionally used to treat acne but can be used to lighten dark spots, especially those from post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. "It does so by
