GER: Gastroesophageal Reflux Signs, Symptoms, Treatment - Verywell Health

Image
Gastroesophageal reflux (GER), also sometimes referred to as acid reflux, is a digestive phenomenon that occurs when stomach contents come back up into your esophagus. This can cause symptoms such as pain or burning in the chest (heartburn), sore throat, gas, bloating, and bad breath. When GER occurs in repeated bouts, it is considered to be a digestive disorder called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This happens when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) either becomes weak or it relaxes when it shouldn't. Obesity, smoking, diet, and pregnancy are also risk factors for this condition.  This article will discuss the differences between GER and GERD as well as treatment options and the medical complications that may come about if left untreated.  Asian woman suffering from acid reflux or heartburn while working at office desk.  Doucefleur / Getty Images GER vs. GERD: What Are the Differences? Recipients' experience with information provision for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) - BMC Psychiatry - BMC Psychiatry

Image
The following themes were identified: Pre-treatment knowledge This theme captures accounts that describe the knowledge, sources of information and attitudes participants had prior to receiving ECT. For many participants, ECT was perceived as an outdated method of which they had little knowledge before undergoing it themselves. Many participants had associations from movies, a musical ('Next to Normal'), media or figurative art, which were often dramatic ECT representations. When the clinicians proposed ECT as a treatment, some participants were motivated to try it, as they had not responded to other treatments. For many of the participants, however, the first reaction was fear or hesitation. As one participant noted: "I remember the first time the psychiatrist in the private health service proposed it, and I totally—I completely freaked out at the thought". Effort to Move Doctors' Pay Away from Volume Finds Obstacles - WebMD

Image
Feb. 14, 2022 – Doctors are still largely paid by how many patients they see and services they provide, despite years of discussions about pegging their pay to judgments about the quality of the care they deliver, according to the authors of a new study. Volume-based pay was the most common type of base income for more than 80% of primary care doctors and for more than 90% of specialists in a sample studied by Rachel O. Reid, MD, of Rand Corp., and co-authors. They published their findings Jan. 28 in JAMA Health Forum. Their study examined the pay in 31 doctor groups that work with 22 U.S. health systems. The percentages of total doctor compensation based on quality and cost performance judgments were "modest," at 9% for primary care providers and 5% for specialists, the researchers found. These findings may be a "solid reality check" on progress in shifting the U.S. practice of medicine toward what are called value-based arrangements, Reid tells WebMD. Their findin...

Researchers do not fully understand the cause, but it frequently occurs in sexually active people, making it more likely for them to contract a sexually transmitted infection (STI). At-home tests allow a person to self-check for BV. Although the tests can provide a person with information about a possible infection, individuals should still see their doctor if they receive a positive result. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) , BV is the most common vaginal condition in people aged 15–44 years. Despite being common in sexually ac...
